The old registration district of Milton was on the Glasgow’s north side, and is better identified as part of the Cowcaddens. The Clyde Canal no longer exists, but was a central part of the district at the end of the nineteenth century, and it was here that the Galt, Barr and Littlejohn families merged before leaving for Queensland in 1883. By the 1880s, the Cowcaddens had developed into a notoriously bad slum area, with infant mortality rates more than three times those in Glasgow’s west end. This was an area that very few of our Craig side of the family ever lived in, although my late Auntie Joyce had a small bric-a-brac shop in Port Dundas Road in the 1970s.
