Ancestors of Annie Brown

[Under construction. Chart updated 29 May 2024.]

Annie Brown, my great-grandmother, was descended from a number of Ayrshire families: Brown; Pinkerton; Wyllie; and Millar.  These mostly originated in the parish of Beith, close by the border with Renfrewshire, but gradually moved to the town of Kilmarnock where they were engaged in the weaving trade. Annie’s father, James Brown, was a cork-cutter by trade and the family moved about a fair bit,  eventually settling at Hutchesontown, in the Glasgow Gorbals.

James, was rarely at the family home on census nights, so we have few records of him. However, recent finds show him working in Yarm, Yorkshire, in 1891, and living as a pauper at the Holburn Union Casual Wards, London, in 1901. He likely died shortly after that at another hospital in London.
